In response to John Green – Why Are American Health Care Costs So High?
A few additional problems I’ve heard about since first seeing this video:
– The “charge master”, a hospital’s master list for how much they charge for each procedure before discounts are negotiated with insurers, is completely arbitrary. Also hospitals’ charge masters vary wildly, so even if your procedure allows you time to comparison-shop it’s still really hard to figure out what a reasonable price is for a procedure is.
– There are two sides to a price negotiation for a healthcare procedure. The healthcare provider negotiates how much they are willing to perform the procedure for and the healthcare insurer negotiates how much a patient is willing to pay should the procedure be necessary.
